The deadline is strict: you must contact Poppins within 48 hours of the scheduled return date. It's the scheduled date that counts, not the actual handback — returning late doesn't extend the claim window. After that, the claim isn't accepted.

In practice, photograph the item at handover and at return: that's what settles a dispute. Poppins support advertises a response within two hours on weekdays.

Poppins makes its money through a 20% commission on rentals by individuals, and 15% for partner shops. That's the business model: signing up and listing items is free, the cut is taken on the transaction.

In practice, on a kayak rented at €30 a day, you keep €24. Lucie Basch suggests someone renting out two items a week can make around €120 a month in extra income — read that as an order of magnitude that assumes in-demand, well-located items, not a guarantee.

This income is taxable above the thresholds that apply to peer-to-peer rental earnings; check your own situation. If your goal is to get rid of things rather than monetise them, Geev (free giving) and Le Bon Coin (resale) fit better.

Poppins is the only one built for short-term rental: the item stays the owner's property and goes back to them. That's the right answer for expensive kit used once a year.

Poppins is a French app, rooted in Paris and its region — that's where item density is highest and where the service started in 2025.

The rollout follows the big cities: Marseille opened in early April 2026, after Bordeaux and Lyon. The model depends directly on density: in a thinly covered town you'll see few items nearby, which remains the service's main limitation. There is no coverage outside France.
